Marlow is a town and civil parish located within the High Wycombe district in South Buckinghamshire. The town is situated along the picturesque banks of the River Thames and is surrounded by a number of small villages. These include: Little Marlow, Bourne End as well as Bisham and Cookham Dean which are both situated across the River Thames.
Marlow is believed to have become an important trade link during the days of the Roman Empire. A number of the roads that cross through Buckinghamshire are based on the first roads produced during the Roman period. However, arguably the most prominent historical period for Marlow is the Anglo-Saxon period. With the establishment of a royal palace in nearby Brill, the town and surrounding area became a very popular part of British society. During the reign of King Henry VIII the town also became popular with the royals. It is rumoured that Jane Seymour lived at Seymour Court just a mile north of Marlow and that Henry VIII courted her in the gardens of the house.
Rowing has been a major part of the town’s heritage, being associated with two regattas. The two associated regattas are The Marlow Town Regatta and Marlow International Regatta. It is believed that an annual regatta has taken place in the town since 1855, with Marlow’s Original River Regatta taking place annually in June. A number of successful rowers have trained as part of the Marlow Rowing Club, which was founded in 1871, including Sir Steve Redgrave. A statue to commemorate Sir Steve Redgrave can be seen in Higginson Park overlooking the river.
Marlow is situated just south of the M40 and just north of the M4, thus providing easy travel routes to London, Reading and Birmingham to name but a few. There is also a train station in Marlow town centre which provides a single track branch line from Maidenhead and frequent bus services to neighbouring towns including High Wycombe, Henley–on–Thames and Reading.
The fact that there are not many larger businesses based in Marlow has meant that smaller businesses have been able to provide a stronghold to life in the town. There are many independent shops and small businesses that have managed to thrive in the town.
