This town of Beaconsfield continues to do well. Originally built in a clearing between beech trees as it’s name suggests. The name does not derive from a field with a beacon! It grew, at least in part, because it was the first staging point for coach and horses travelling between London and Oxford. Later the new town of Beaconsfield was built one mile to the north when the railway from Marylebone in central London to Birmingham arrived in the town about 1900. This town therefore has two centres the old and new towns and some of the most desirable properties are within walking distance of both. The old town is quite picturesque, the new town less so but it has several eateries and coffee bars which spill onto the pavements and give it an almost parisienne feel.
The rail service from Beaconsfield to London is very good with frequent fast and slow trains. The fast trains take about 25 minutes.
There is a Beaconsfield annual fair which is held on May 10th each year and which has currently been running for over 700 years. Now it is a large funfair which closes the main road running through the old town of Beaconsfield but in earlier times it was a more traditional livestock and produce affair. The road is the A40, a continuation of Oxford Street, the great shopping street of the capital, and on this you can drive all the way through Wales to the town of Fishguard on the coast from where you can catch a ferry to Ireland.
The town is the home of the National Film and Television School formerly Beaconsfield Film Studios and also Beckonscot Model Village which was the first model village in the world. Both bring money and prosperity to the town, but most wealth of course comes from the proximity of the London, Heathrow, Slough and High Wycombe settlements, where real business is done !
