Uxbridge is a town in West London which historically formed part of the parish of Hillingdon. It expanded during the 20th century and has formed part of Greater London since 1965. It is now considered to be one of the major metropolitan centres as identified by former Mayor Boris Johnson, in the London Plan. Uxbridge is a commercial centre with two large shopping centres as well as a weekly craft market.
Uxbridge has key transport links with easy access up to London via the A40 which runs all the way to High Holborn. The A40 joins the M40 at Uxbridge making travel in and out of the town very convenient. Uxbridge Bus Station is situated in the centre of town providing good transport links to Heathrow Airport, High Wycombe and Hemel Hempstead. Uxbridge also has a London Underground Tube Station with Metropolitan and Piccadilly tube lines running directly from the centre of town, providing journeys into central London in 50 minutes. The Grand Union Canal also runs just to the West of Uxbridge which connects London to Birmingham.
Uxbridge is home to both Brunel University and the campus of Buckinghamshire New University. Brunel University has excellent sporting facilities which are used by famous athletes as their training base. During the London 2012 Olympics, Brunel was the host venue for the Korean Olympic Training Camp as well as the Canadian Paralympic Training Camp. The most famous regular using the facilities is the world’s greatest athlete, Usain Bolt, who uses Brunel’s facilities as his training base with the Jamaican team for the summer seasons.
There are various major businesses in Uxbridge as it is an attractive place for business due to the good transport links and proximity to central London. The head office of Coca Cola Enterprises is located in Uxbridge among many substantial businesses including a major office for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.
Various historical events have happened in Uxbridge including negotiations between King Charles I and the Parliamentary Army during the English Civil War. RAF Uxbridge houses the Battle of Britain Bunker from which air defence was coordinated from the Fighter Command No.11 Group Operations Room throughout the Second World War.
