Slough, 22 miles west of London, is soon to have its position as the gateway to the Silicon Valley of the UK reinforced when it is linked directly by rail to the main London international airport Heathrow which is about 5 miles away. This is the town that provides work for many who live in the town but also many more who live in the surrounding leafy suburbs, whether they be in Berkshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire or even Oxfordshire. Slough is where our office is situated, one mile from the largest trading estate in Europe under single ownership, Slough Trading Estate, owned by SEGRO plc. Being in Slough, many of our clients have international connections which in 2012 prompted us to include “international” in the name of our auditing arm which is now called Eacotts International Limited. The international connection might be a UK company with an overseas subsidiary, a UK company owned by an overseas parent or internationally mobile employees.
Slough is situated at the eastern end of Berkshire, closer to London than the county town of Reading and only a couple of miles from Windsor where the Queen has her country home in the castle. The River Thames flows close by the town and the Jubilee River built as part of a flood relief scheme is even closer.
Slough is served by the main line railway linking London to the west of the country leaving The capital at Paddington Station. Soon Crossrail will be built linking Slough by a fast connection to east London and beyond. For motor vehicles the M4 passes the town and there are 3 junctions east, west and central where it can be joined. Travelling North and South by road is quite easy using the M25 via the M4 or M40 for connection to the main arterial motorways. The M40 for Oxford, Birmingham and further north destinations passes a few miles from the town.

The oldest building in Slough is St Lawrence’s church which dates from the 12th century and which stands close to Upton Court which dates from 1325, although some timbers in the south wall date from 1280, and is a very good example of an Aisled Hall with distinctive hammer beams.. It was built by the Merton Monks after they were given the manor in 1156 and was for many years a monastery until the dissolution under Henry V111. Upton itself was even mentioned in the Doomsday book of 1086.
